Yemeni Government Assures Food Security Amid Houthi Terrorist Designation

In response to the recent designation of the Houthi movement as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government, the Yemeni government has stepped forward to assure that it will take all necessary measures to protect vulnerable social groups and food imports. This declaration was made during a meeting between Prime Minister Ahmed bin Mubarak and the UN resident coordinator in Yemen, Julian Harneis, in the capital city of Aden.

Prime Minister bin Mubarak reassured the humanitarian community that the government is committed to implementing coordinated actions to ensure that the implications of this designation do not adversely affect humanitarian efforts or the availability of essential food and life-saving goods. He emphasized the urgency of avoiding harm to the vulnerable segments of society, particularly in regions controlled by the Houthis, amid concerns of potential international sanctions impacting local civilians.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the government’s support for the Joint Coordination Committee with the United Nations, aimed at prioritizing interventions and transitioning from humanitarian assistance to early recovery and sustainable development. This collaboration is crucial for evaluating the pressing needs and adapting to the evolving situation in Yemen.

During the meeting, various humanitarian response programs led by the UN and its affiliated organizations were discussed, alongside strategies to address the decline in international support. The ongoing violations perpetrated by the Houthi movement against relief workers and employees were also noted, alongside the need to relocate organizational offices to Aden to enhance operational effectiveness.

The designation by the U.S. government has raised significant concerns over the potential disruption of humanitarian aid in areas under Houthi control, emphasizing the need for careful management of resources and support to mitigate any potential negative impacts on the Yemeni population during this challenging time.
